Santa Carla Boardwalk Battle!
The traditional thrills and spills of the Santa Carla Beach Boardwalk are eschewed in favour of higher tech excitement! The local kids gather on a bluff with hologram projecting game consoles strapped to their backs, ready to take part in the ultimate Battle Royale!
This illustration has been the most involved piece I've done yet. At 6000 x 4000 pixels it pushed my iPad pro and my layer management skills to their limits! But it also gave me the opportunity to explore adding lots of detail.
I was inspired by one of my art heroes, Todd Schorr who creates large scale paintings full of crazy characters and bizarre pop culture references. Its easy to get lost in his work as you pour over each detail. I wanted to create a similar feeling with this piece.
I'll be adding original sketches from this project soon, and one or two of the characters might find their way into ZBrush at some point in the future!

The overall composition is inspired by Todd Schorr's artwork. I wanted to make the sprites feel huge against the backdrop of the decaying boardwalk, and feature some of my favourite 80's vehicles in the foreground.
The Santa Carla Skate Shop van! There's not much room for carrying stock around, but at least there's a Nintendo session at the ready when out doing deliveries!
The hologram producing backpacks are based on the designs of the SNES, Megadrive and, of course, a Proton Pack!
The end of level boss is based on a character I first started drawing when I was 11. I even made him out of Plasticine at some stage.
This is another character I've been drawing for a while. She definitely needs her own spin off project!
I'm a big fan of the Weird-Oh style so had to make a Sonic version!
This guy was inspired by Dr Robotnik, Keith Flint and the Wrong Trousers!
One of the first pictures I drew as a kid that I remember feeling really proud of was of a zombie. I had to add this guy!
