Santa Carla Video City - Inktober!

Since my video store project has turned into such an endeavor, I've decided to use each Inktober as an excuse to create some unique cover designs. I love spending time each October focussing on traditional skills and seeing what I can create with my collection of Copic and Posca markers.
In 2021 I created a series of traditional inked illustrations that I was happy with, but felt they lacked a bit of punch and depth compared to my digital illustrations so in 2022 I tried something a little different - negative inks! By digitally inverting the final sketch I could use the natural whiteness of the paper to create deep blacks and then ink with reversed colours and values to create the intended look. Dark inks appear light when reversed so this allowed a lot of fine control over highlights and accenting certain areas of the illustration. It took some trial and error (and the use of my trusty colour wheel) but I really enjoyed the process and the final results had the impact I was looking for!
