I’ve been fascinated with the airbrush since I was a kid. Before CG it was the only real way to get highly polished, 3D looking visuals. As such it has a distinctly 80s aesthetic to my eye and was therefore a natural candidate for another one of my traditionally created one sheet illustrations for my Video City project. I decided to use a blank spoon-nosed skate deck as a canvas and pay homage to one of my favorite Jim Phillips designs.
As anticipated, the airbrush was an unforgiving tool to wrangle. I took many steps back with each small amount of progress made. However the 80s skater kid in me ended up pleased with the final result. And once painted and gloss coated I couldn't resist completing the deck with some colour appropriate grip tape, trucks, risers and Slimeball wheels!
